IT'S ALL ABOUT LAYERING
How to dress to keep warm and dry in all weathers
Dressing in layers allows golfers to easily adapt to the weather, adding layers when its cooler or removing them when it gets warmer. Many golfers underestimate just how much heat is generated in a round of golf and frequently dress too warm with the opposite happening on colder days leaving the golfer cold, stiff, and uncomfortable throughout the round.
Abacus would suggest putting some thought into an outfit prior to hitting the course, especially when the weather is more demanding. What you wear could be the deciding factor in how well you play and how comfortable you are out on the course.
A basic layering rule is to make sure as much of the clothing as possible features technologies such as stretch and breathability. A base layer without wicking, for example, will reduce the effects of a high-tech outer layer, affecting both comfort and ultimately your focus on the game. Stretch and lightweight in every layer is also important, especially in spring and fall, when more clothes are needed for warmth.
Stretchy garments make sure nothing gets in the way of that all-important golf swing.
Layer no 1
- the base
With apparel it’s easy to put all the focus onto the outer layers, and many golfers forget that they should focus on that all important base layer. If the garment next to your skin has little or no wicking properties, the body heat stays in the base layer, moisture won’t be moved away from the body which leads to cold setting in, and golf becomes very wet and uncomfortable. When this happens even the best technical outer layer has minimal effect and its benefits are lost.
Key to a good base layer is the material that it’s made from. Only materials with a high breathability and wicking properties should be next to the skin to ensure that heat and moisture are moved quickly away from the body always keeping you comfortable. In addition, the amount a garment stretches is important to make sure nothing gets in the way of the golf swing. A lightweight layer next to the skin makes you less bulky and more flexible.

Layer no 2
- warmth
A warming second layer, that is easy to put on and take off, will add warmth under an outer layer when the temperature drops and can be used as the main protection during warmer periods of the round. A soft fleece with extra padding on the large parts of the body that tend to get cold, for example on the upper chest and shoulders is an excellent choice. Banff hoodie or Worburn midlayer are excellent tops that offer warmth in these major areas without sacrificing freedom of movement.

Layer no 3
- protection
The outermost layer needs to protect you from the wind and rain. This may be a rain jacket - soft, stretchy, highly breathable, wind and waterproof and easy to stow away in a golf bag. The multi award winning abacus Pitch jacket would be the ideal choice. For dry days the abacus Grove Hybrid vest is the perfect windproof choice. Its quilted front adds extra warmth, while sides and shoulders have a stretchy fleece, ensuring full movement throughout the swing.

Trousers to suit the weather
When the weather turns cold, windy, or rainy, choosing the right golf pants makes all the difference. Cold legs are not only uncomfortable — they can affect your circulation, your focus, and your overall enjoyment on the course. That’s why it’s essential to complete your layering with trousers designed specifically for colder conditions.
A perfect example would be the abacus® Druids warm and water-repellent trousers or the Links warm warm and waterproof trousers. They look and feel just like regular pants, yet inside they’re lined with a soft, breathable brushed tricot that keeps you comfortably warm and dry. Offering full wind protection and excellent stretch for unrestricted movement, these trousers deliver both performance and style. Once you try them, they’re bound to become a go-to favorite in your golf wardrobe.
